Grand Prix van de Verenigde Staten - Circuit of the Americas
Het Circuit of the Americas, ook wel COTA genoemd, is het circuit waar jaarlijks de Formule 1 Grand Prix van de Verenigde Staten wordt gehouden. De baan behoort tot een van de nieuwste F1 circuits en is ontworpen door Hermann Tilke, een Duitse ingenieur en voormalig autocoureur.
Jong circuit
Daar waar veel circuits op het Europese continent — denk aan Monza, Zandvoort en Spa — in het begin van de 20e eeuw werden gebouwd, begon de bouw van COTA pas in 2010. Het Circuit of the Americas is het geesteskind van de Amerikaanse zakenman en voormalig race coureur Tavo Hellmund. Slechts twee jaar na de aanvang van de bouw was het 5.513 kilometer lange circuit klaar voor gebruik en ontving de baan direct de benodigde FIA certificering (FIA Grade 1).
Circuit of the Americas & Formule 1
Sinds 2012 maakt COTA dan ook vast onderdeel uit van de Formule 1 kalender en, in tegenstelling tot veel andere ‘nieuwe banen, viel de baan direct in de smaak bij zowel fans als coureurs. Onder andere de razendsnelle bochtencombinatie in de eerste sector, de langzamere sector 3 en de lange back straight maken dat het circuit uitdagend is voor coureurs. Daarnaast is het circuit ontworpen voor moderne Formule 1-auto’s, waardoor er relatief veel plekken zijn waar ingehaald kan worden. Verder is het circuit sinds zijn bouw niet of nauwelijk aangepast.
Uniek maar herkenbaar circuit
Doorgewinterde race- en Formule 1-fans zullen veel onderdelen van COTA herkennen. Dit is vanwege het feit dat de ontwerpers inspiratie hebben gehaald uit al bestaande circuits. Neem bijvoorbeeld de eerste sector: die lijkt verdacht veel op de Maggots-Becketts-Chapel bochtencombinatie van Silverstone. Andere stukken hebben weer veel weg van de ‘stadium section’ van Hockenheim en Istanbul Park’s bocht acht.
Grand Prix van Amerika steeds populairder
Met de Grand Prix van Amerika in 2012 keerde de Formule 1 terug in de Verenigde Staten. De laatste keer dat de sport in de VS racete was vijf jaar eerder, op de Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Ondanks het feit dat de sport in de Verenigde Staten rond 2012 niet populair was trok de Grand Prix veel bezoekers aan.
De terugkeer van de GP van Amerika op de Formule 1-kalender en de spannende races op COTA hebben er, samen met de Netflix-serie Drive to Survive en andere factoren, ongetwijfeld toe geleid dat de sport in de VS ook steeds meer voet aan de grond kreeg. Zo werd in navolging van het succes van de Grand Prix, in 2021 de eerste Grand Prix op een stratencircuit in Floride gehouden en in 2023 staat ook een Grand Prix in Las Vegas op de planning.
